PRI (Pepkio Research Index) is an open-research project that surfaces the most-cited recent papers in a scientific field and reveals the trends shaping its frontier. By combining transparent bibliometric methods with large language model curation, PRI delivers field-specific rankings that are timely, reproducible, and free of proprietary data barriers.
Traditional "most-cited" lists often rely on lifetime citations and can be dominated by older, well-known work. PRI takes a different approach. We use a fixed 18-month citation window after publication to capture early impact—when fresh findings are actively influencing the direction of research. An LLM-based relevance filter then ensures every ranked paper is substantively about the target topic, removing articles that are only tangentially related. The result is a dynamic snapshot of what a field is paying attention to right now.
Each ranking is accompanied by a topic-trend analysis that shows which themes, techniques, and concepts are rising or falling year-over-year. This gives researchers, funders, and science communicators a data-driven view of how a discipline is evolving.
PRI is built entirely on open infrastructure. Bibliographic data comes from OpenAlex, a free and open scholarly database. All rankings, figures, and supplementary data are published under a CC BY 4.0 license, so you can reuse, share, or build upon them with appropriate credit. The full methodology is documented transparently on every topic page.
PRI is an initiative of PEPKIO, an independent research effort dedicated to making scientific impact more visible, interpretable, and useful. We believe that open, reproducible metrics can complement expert judgment and help the research community navigate the ever-growing volume of scientific literature.
Whether you are a researcher tracking your field, a journal editor scanning for emerging trends, or simply curious about the direction of modern science, we hope PRI serves as a helpful and trustworthy compass.
